Montezuma Horseback Rides
The Mountain Waterfall Ride
This ride can go out at anytime of day, although I recommend early in the morning or later in the afternoon for better wildlife sighting and cooler temperatures. We begin at the farm about 5 km above Montezuma and ride out on the old Bijagua road to the little pueblo called Florida, passing through rolling farmland and tropical dry forest. There are glimpses of the Pacific Ocean from the hilltops and plenty of butterflies along the way and monkeys overhead in the trees. If you are lucky you may spot pizotes or anteaters or armadillos as well. The variety of trees and plants is endless and there are so many birds you will be amazed. Flocks of parrots fly chattering overhead, or you may hear a pair of laughing falcons talking to each other.
We cross into a private farm which will lead us to the destination of the Panica Falls. You may stroll along leisurely or lope though the countryside. Just about the time you are ready for a break we stop and get off and walk down to falls for a refreshing swim. The falls are beautiful and private with a perfect little natural jacuzzi. There is a small fall at the top, five o six little pools and then another larger fall at the bottom. For the “tarzan” in you there is a great rope swing with several different take off points for a little extra added excitement. We stay and swim here for a while, have a little snack and then ride back. I promise you will have an unforgettable time, something you will talk about when you get home.
This ride is between 3 and 4 hours, depending how fast you ride and how long you stop for a swim. It is best to wear long pants and shoes, and bring o wear something to swim in. You may want to bring sunscreen and a hat, and a camera is a must. We provide water and fruit and fun!

The Montezuma Waterfall Canopy Tour is one of the zone’s premier attractions. The canopy consists of a series of nine cables and eleven platforms suspended high above the forest floor. The guests glide along the cables using a pully and a breaking device.
Our local, English speaking guides are experienced and are trained in First Aid to ensure that this tour is safe and easy for all visitors. While on the canopy tour you will see a number of plants and animals unique to Costa Rica, possibly including howler and white-faced monkeys, parrots, and iguanas.
The course follows the Montezuma river and gives you an opportunity to visit the famous waterfalls where you can take pictures and go for a swim in the pools carved by the cascading waters. This is an experience that should not be missed.

The Canopy tour is based on the quiet village of Malpais, on a farm with more than 200 different tree species, at the entrance of the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve.
The whole area is covered in rich tropical forest and diverse wildlife: white face capuchin, howler monkey, armadillo, squirrel, white-tailed deer, coati, raccoon, opossum, green and black iguana, tayra, bat, porcupine, paca, margay, peccary, northern tamandua, skunk, coyote, agouti, as well as many birds like woodpecker, white-threaded magpie-jai, bare-throated tiger heron, crested caracara, white fronted parrot, black-headed trogon, turquoise-browed motmot, long tailed manakin and many more may be seen.
Come and journey through the treetops, enjoying the tropical forest while the Pacific Ocean lies below you.
The exiting canopy ride is nearly a kilometer long and has 8 platforms set high in the gigantic trees. Steel cables connect the platforms, which are between 5 and 25 meters in height.
You will not forget the experience of flying along our 300 meters long shot over a canyon between the second and the third platform. You can also enjoy two exciting rappels descending from gigantic trees.
Professional nature guides will accompany you on the unforgettable journey through the biodiversity. They will introduce you to the fascinating secrets of the forest.
Following the strictest safety norms, you will enjoy thrilling views of the Pacific Ocean and of the forest from many different perspectives.
This activity does not damage the environment: to ride through the forest we do not use gasoline or electricity, fostering the true spirit of eco-adventure.

Montezuma Scuba Diving
Paradise Tortuga Island is located on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica in the Nicoya Peninsula, which is surrounded by an abundance of dive sites, most of which are accessible within a thirty minutes boat ride.
Isla Tortuga and its surrenders are famous around the world because is the only area in Costa Rica and Central America with three sank boats, where we provided one of the best diving adventures in Costa Rica. Average visibility ranges from 30 ft. to 50 ft. with possibilities of up to 80 ft. We dive volcanic rock formations and rock pinnacles.
Our local dive sites offer white tip sharks, giant schools of grunt, yellowtails, spotted eagle rays, turtles, stingrays, angel fish, octopus, sea horses, starfish, frog fish and many species of eels. We have also seen whale sharks up to 35 feet long on numerous occasions, as well as, spinner dolphin, humpback whales, pilot whales, orcas, false killer whales and schools containing hundreds of Mobulas and thousands of cow-nosed rays.
The dive itself offers you the chance to explore the micro life, along with very large puffer fish, nudibranchs, gigantic slumbering parrotfish, lobster, tube worms and sea horses.
Also offered are long-range dive trips to both the Tortuga Island and Curu Wild Life Refuge. Tortuga Island is the ONLY place in Costa Rica where you can dive all the year around. Schools of Manta rays with wingspans from 14 ft. to 20 ft. have been seen along with numerous white tip.
The outside temperature at the beaches is 85° to 90° year round. The rainy season runs from May to November, with these months providing some of our best diving. Since we are located in a protected area and do not have rivers draining into our water and visibility is not adversely affected by the rain. In fact, visibility is often enhanced as the rain settles the plankton and rich nutrients that are abundant in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Sport fishing
More information about Sport Fishing:
Marlin Fishing: Marlin are seen throughout the year, predominantly between the months of January through mid September. Blue, Black and Striped are commonly seen mixed in with the migrating sailfish.
Sailfishing: Sailfish are the most predominant species here on the Pacific Coast waters of Costa Rica. You should expect to see many free jumpers and excessive amounts of sailfish during the months of December through May. We release approximately 5 to 15 sailfish daily.
Tuna Fishing: Tunas are caught year round. Usually when you sight a pod of spinning dolphins, a school of tuna is close by.
Dorado Fishing: Dorado, also known as Mahi Mahi or Dolphin fish. Dorado are most abundant between the months of December through October when the rivers send floating logs and other debris to the ocean. These fish are attracted to drifting debris and are commonly found swimming around underneath. Dorado is a species here in Costa Rica that can also be caught year round.
Wahoo Fishing: The area is not known to hold great numbers of these fast fish, but you never know. They are found year round in random numbers, however one of these as a catch can provide a GREAT DINNER!
Roosterfish: Undoubtedly, the Roosterfish is the most exciting inshore fish available and are the main attraction to inshore fishermen. These fish lurk around rocky bottoms and are one heck of a fight! They are not to good for eating due to of all their muscle but they do tend to bring a lot of spunk to the line. Roosters can be caught year round averaging from 20 to 40 pounds.
Cubera Snapper Fishing: This is the most popular of all the local Snappers, due to its size and sheer strength. Fish over 50lbs have been caught in the area, year round. They are very similar to the Red Snapper fish.

The private speed boat, taxi boat or water taxi to Montezuma or Jaco is one of the best way of transportation in this area of Costa Rica. Saving up to 7 hours of hot and uncomfortable trip by land, the taxi boat most accurate way to get to Montezuma or Jaco.
Taxi Boat Jaco Montezuma
We ended up staying two nights here and then leaving via private taxi boat across the awesome Nicoya Gulf, ($45USD ea), for a 1 hour transfer to the to town of Jaco (which would have taken us at least 8 hours of busing / ferries to get to otherwise.
Taxi Boat
So in a few minutes we're off to taxi a “Taxi Boat” up the coast to Montezuma, which is on the peninsula on the north pacific side of Costa Rica. I've wanted to go to this area for a while now! See the image on how we'll cut across the ocean to get there. The boat is an hour instead of the many (treacherous) hours driving up the coast and probably more scenic :)
A full day adventure, all-inclusive!
Cruising along the coast for a breathtaking 50-minute boat ride is how you’ll begin your voyage to Tortuga Island. Jagged volcanic rock spills into the sea to create a dramatic contrast with the brown sand, red rocks and crushed shells that make up the variety of different beaches along the way.
Spotting a group of playful dolphins, marveling at the enormous jumping manta rays or for the luckiest of visitors, catching a glimpse of surfacing humpback whales are just a few examples of the marine life frequently viewed as we make our way to the island.
Upon arriving to the tropical paradise of Tortuga Island we anchor the boat within viewing distance of the white sand beach for our first snorkeling session. The crystal waters at Tortuga are surrounded by volcanic rock reef which is home of the best snorkeling site on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast.
King Angelfish, Porcupine fish, Morays, Needlefish, Spotted Eagle Rays and a myriad of other tropical beauties make for a phenomenal snorkeling experience. Not to mention the oysters your guide might find for a fresh ceviche on the beach!
After your incredible snorkeling adventure we take you onto the white sand beach of Tortuga Island. While lunch is being prepared grab a cold drink and take a stroll along the beach and swim in the calm crystal waters. For lunch our chef serves up fresh BBQ fish or chicken in his secret sauce, tasty grilled potatoes and vegetables, bread and a big fresh tropical fruit buffet.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Take part in a volleyball game or rent a kayak to discover the other secluded beaches of the island. Or for the more adventurous take a hike up to the top of the island for some spectacular views of the Gulf of Nicoya and the surrounding islands. Join us for a second snorkeling session at a different spot on the reef or take a siesta under the coco palms on the island. As the day comes to an end we get back on the boat for the picturesque ride back to Montezuma.
