Curu National Wildlife
Refuge
Situated
only 12 km from Tambor, the Curu National Wildlife Refuge and Hacienda is
habitat for some of the most assorted wildlife that is found in the Costa Rican
peninsula. Covering an area of about 84 hectares (i.e. 200 acres approx.), the
National Wildlife Refuge offers the most intimate experience of wildlife. Along
with the immaculate, white sand shoreline, travelers, explorers and enthusiasts
alike can enjoy the amazing and exquisite sights and the wildlife. There are more
than 232 species of wildlife in the Refuge, which includes birds and quite a
few species of turtles and other animals. It can be enjoyed by just laying back
and relaxing or while other curious enthusiastic travelers can venture in to
many trails that snake throughout the conserved area.
Major
portions of the park are, however, restricted to general venturing and only
scientific personnel and researches with permits can enter the areas.
Irrespective of the fact, the area has enough for you to see and explore.
Snorkeling is extremely popular in this area and the National Park is host to
many local and Pacific fish who breed here.
White-faced
monkeys, Spider monkeys, Howler monkeys and Scarlet Macaws are found in
abundance here and therefore you always need to be ready with your camera at
each second, so as not to miss capturing a sight. You can also spot abundance
of other furry creatures scampering around, among whom some might be familiar
to you and some might not. These species include the Raccoon, Collared Peccary,
Coati, Coyotes, Iguanas, Whitetail deer and many more to your surprise.
In
addition, cabins are available for very enthusiastic and adventurous travelers,
which are lit by candlelight and are optimum in terms of comfort. The ocean
waves break down within some feet from the cabins and the rustic outing can
satisfy the appetite of an adventurous mind, helping it to spot wildlife during
early hours of the day, when it exhibits superlative activity.
The Curu
National Wildlife Refuge remains open from 7 AM to 3 PM. Particulars include:
- $8 for entry fee per person
per day
- $8 for a bed in a cabin per
person per night
- $4 for breakfast; $5 for
lunch; and $5 for dinner per person per meal
- $10 for renting a horse per
hour.
